Sizing Up BodyGuardz Pure and Pure®2: Differences and Similarities

If you’ve read our emails, scrolled through our social feeds, or read any of our blog posts over the last few months, chances are you’ve heard a thing or two about the upcoming launch of our new line of screen protectors—Pure®2.

But you may be wondering: why all the hype? What makes BodyGuardz Pure®2 so special? Is there even a difference between the Pure and the Pure®2 screen protector? Today, we’ll answer all those questions, and maybe even a few more!

The Pure and Pure®2—How They’re Different

The Pure®2 Features Aluminosilicate Glass, Unlike Other Tempered Glass Screen Protectors

Traditional tempered glass screen protectors—including BodyGuardz Pure—are made from soda-lime glass. Soda-lime glass accounts for around 90% of all glass products you see and use on a daily basis, including windows, bottles, and jars.

Aluminosilicate glass is a rare type of glass which features—you guessed it!—aluminum. The aluminum in gives the glass several special properties.

Aluminosilicate Glass is Superior to Soda-Lime Glass

Aluminosilicate glass is composed of aluminum, oxygen, and silicon, as well as healthy percentage of alkali content. This combination of materials strengthens the surface of the glass and also gives it a high transformation temperature. These features provide several benefits, including:

• Hardness, which protects against impacts
• Scratch resistance
• Internal glass strength helps prevent scratches from becoming deep cracks

As a result, the Pure® 2 is several times stronger than the Pure, even in a thinner form factor.

Pure® 2 Is Created Using a Proprietary Fusion Process

To make the Pure® 2 possible, we’ve partnered with Corning to produce our screen protectors using Accessory Glass 2 by Corning. This partnership is significant because thanks to Corning’s proprietary fusion process, our aluminosilicate glass screen protectors can be produced at an exact thickness.

Most soda-lime glass screen protectors are produced at the same thickness, then shaved down to achieve a company’s desired thickness. This “shaving” process can actually cause microfractures in the glass, thereby increasing the likelihood that the protector will crack.

While the BodyGuardz Pure is currently the thickest, strongest screen protector on the market, Pure®2 will be both thinner and stronger thanks to this fusion process.

The finishing touches of AlumiTech™
Although Aluminosilicate glass is rare and extremely strong, it’s not the only thing setting Pure 2 apart. AlumiTech is composed of highly specialized, impact absorbing adhesive and precision cut edges.

Our years of experience and partnerships with materials scientists have allowed us to develop the perfect thickness of adhesive material. The adhesive serves two functions: keeping the protector in place, and absorbing impact from everyday drops.

To the naked eye, the edges look like regular square cuts. However; we’ve developed a specific geometry with precise dimensions to all but eliminate the annoying chips and “halo-ing”

The combination of Aluminosilicate glass and AlumiTech provides the best screen protection on the market.

Pure and Pure®2—How They’re Similar

Pure®2 Will Undergo a Special Ionization Process

In addition to Corning’s proprietary fusion process, Pure®2 will be strengthened even further during an ionization process.

The glass in Pure®2 is bathed in a solution of potassium nitrate at 400℃. At this temperature, the potassium molecules split from the solution and become positively charged potassium ions. The positive charge gives them the energy needed to replace the sodium molecules in the glass, which is important because sodium can cause impurities in the glass.

As the impurities are replaced, the potassium then forms a crystal structure around the glass. This increases the pressure holding the glass together, and also gives the glass an extremely hard surface.
